As you exit the quaint JR Mojiko Station building, you’ll see the Mitsui Club right in front—a historic building where even Albert Einstein once stayed. Just a few minutes’ walk brings you to the Kanmon Strait, offering a view of Shimonoseki on the opposite shore and the Kanmon Bridge spanning the water. Lining the waterfront are hotels and the former customs building, all part of “Mojiko Retro,” a district that has become a popular tourist destination.
Mojiko is also the birthplace of Idemitsu Kosan, and the Idemitsu Museum of Arts located at Mojiko Port includes a Founder’s Reference Room. Sazo Idemitsu (1885–1981), the company’s founder, was one of the business leaders who supported Japan’s postwar economic growth. The reference room offers a glimpse into his life and character.
