・Travel Designer's Comment
In the Nara period, Dazaifu was called "To-no-Mikado" and served as a significant hub for governance, diplomacy, and defense in Kyushu, interacting with China and Korea. Many poets, including Otomo no Tabito (665-731), composed poems here, some of which are included in the "Manyoshu." The era name "Reiwa" also has roots in this region.
In the Heian period, approximately 170 years after Tabito's time, a scholar and politician named Sugawara no Michizane (845-903) was exiled from Kyoto to Dazaifu and never returned. Michizane is now enshrined as the deity of Tenmangu Shrine.
The shrine’s history museum traces the life of Michizane. Currently, the main hall is being rebuilt for the first time in 125 years, and worship is conducted in a temporary hall designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Sosuke Fujimoto.
Within the shrine grounds, visitors can view a 1,500-year-old camphor tree and the legendary "Flying Plum Tree." Michizane is revered as the deity of scholarship, culture, and the arts. The Treasure Hall and Art Museum house traditional masterpieces and contemporary art.
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine attracts 10 million visitors annually. Listening to the stories of the shrine priests offers a profound connection to Michizane and those who have preserved the shrine.
