・Travel Designer's Comment

The Kakiemon Kiln is located in Nangawarayama, Arita Town, Saga Prefecture, slightly removed from Arita Uchiyama's old district, known for its rows of porcelain shops. During Japan's isolationist era in the mid-17th century, Kakiemon overglaze porcelain crossed the seas via Nagasaki's Dejima port, carried by the Dutch East India Company. Cherished by European royalty and nobility as treasures even more valuable than gold or silver, these pieces gained fame for their warm, soft white surfaces and asymmetric compositions that embraced negative space. This style not only became a trend but also heavily influenced European porcelain, including the birth of Meissen in the early 18th century.

On the grounds of the kiln, visitors can explore a modern exhibition hall showcasing contemporary works and the Old Ceramics Reference Museum, which features masterpieces by successive generations of Kakiemon artisans. At the back of the property lies the workshop and kilns, while nearby stands a traditional thatched-roof residence once inhabited by previous generations. A striking persimmon tree, a symbol of the kiln, adds charm to the serene landscape. The harmony between the buildings and the surrounding hills conveys the secret behind the creation of Kakiemon's exquisite porcelain.

The 15th-generation head of the kiln, who succeeded his father—a Living National Treasure—has held the title of Kakiemon for over a decade. The hallmark of Kakiemon porcelain is its distinctive nigoshide surface, a warm white glaze reminiscent of rice-washing water, adorned with vibrant, painterly motifs akin to Japanese art. While preserving the unparalleled traditional techniques, the current head dedicates himself to creating his own works and, together with a team of 40 artisans, develops pieces suited to modern lifestyles.

Porcelain production at Kakiemon differs from pottery in its intricate process, involving over 10 distinct steps, each handled by specialized craftsmen. Some artisans dedicate 30 to 50 years to perfecting a single step, such as a specific phase of painting. Despite their long tenure, they never tire of their craft, continually finding new avenues for learning and growth. Watching their focused yet cheerful expressions as they work is truly inspiring.

As times change, both in Japan and internationally, the evolution of Kakiemon’s style and creations will undoubtedly draw attention. Visitors to the kiln can witness firsthand how this long-standing tradition intertwines with fresh, innovative approaches. It is an encounter where the past and future of Japanese craftsmanship converge.
